Abstract
This paper represents results of a study concerning activities of daily living(ADL0 and mental health among the elderly in a Korean rural community. The parts of the Older Americans Resources and Services(OARS)-Korean version multidimentional
functional
assessment questionnaire were administered to a stratified second stage cluster sample of 1005 non-institutionalized by elderly persons who are over 65 year old. The term impaired ADL group is used to refer to persons who have moderate to total
impairment in ADL, and those who have mildly or no-impairment in ADL is referred to the normal-range group. The difference between these two groups is the level of independence in life. The percentages of impaired ADL group was significantly
increased
with advancing age(p<0.05). The overall incidence of impaired ADL group was 6.1%. The family was the major helper both for the impaired ADL group (100.0%) and normal-range group(96.4%). The ADL impairment group did significantly worse in the
interviewer's assessment of mental health than the normal-range group(p<0.05). The need for doctor in impaired ADL group was greater than the normal-range group, but the number of visits to the clinic by the former was significantly fewer than
the
latter(p<0.05). The long-term care program is recommended for the elderly in community. especially for the impaired ADL group.
